Convenience Food Challenge

Convenience.food.challenge.jpg

In my quest to look at what my Nana would do in life (WWND), I am going to take on a challenge to limit my use of convenience food. We don’t eat out much, but I have to admit there are days when I don’t want to spend much time cooking, so I’ll reach for a main dish out of the freezer. I bake regularly but I also have things ready-made on hand.

My Nana taught at tiny rural schools with not many retail choices, and she survived the Great Depression, so my first step to think about what skills I might need in the climate-changed future, is to look at WWND. And she didn’t use convenience foods very often. I know that we might not have access to the ingredients to make these products ourselves in the future, so much is unknown, but it can’t hurt to be able to practice have the skills to make them yourself.

Things in my challenge I’m going to make myself:

  • Snack bars

  • Frozen pizzas

  • Crackers

  • Cereal / Muesli / Granola

  • Treats

  • Ice Cream

  • Dinners (main dish)

  • Ready-made cooked lunches

Hopefully there’ll be some side effects - I can control the ingredients in our food, and it will save us money!
